Frequently Asked Questions
*What should I wear?
Comfortable clothing designed for exercise and athletic shoes. Avoid pants with
belt buckles, clothing with decorative studs, dress shoes. Temperature in the
Wellness Center can fluctuate depending on the activity level so it's advisable
to wear layers.
*How will I know what to do when I start?
A free orientation and exercise program designed by a staff person is included
with your membership. Speak with a staff person or call to schedule an
appointment.
*Do you have Personal Training?
Yes. You must arrange a schedule that accommodates you and the staff trainer.
Payments are made in the Business Office.
*Am I too old to strength train?
No one is too old to strength train. As we age, we lose muscle and bone density.
Strength training can help reverse this. Older adults may have more to gain from
strength training than younger people.
*I just want to tone up but I'm afraid of getting muscles
like a bodybuilder. Will that happen?
It's no more likely than you becoming a world champion runner by jogging three
times a week. There are different methods of training to accomplish different
goals. Putting on mass or muscularity doesn't happen by accident. It requires
intent. With that in mind, don't let unfounded fears prevent you from getting the
most from your exercise program.
*I see there are towels and spray bottles in the Wellness
Center. What are they for?
The bottles contain a disinfectant cleaner. The towels are primarily to wipe
perspiration from machines when you finish using them. We do, however, recommend
that you bring your own towel, especially if you perspire easily.
*I can't always get on a machine that I'm waiting to use.
What do I do?
If it's a cardio machine, we have sign-up sheets and 30 minute time limits. If
the sign-ups or time limits are being ignored, please tell a staff person. If
it's a strength machine you're waiting for, it is considered normal and proper
to ask if "you may work in". The user should show courtesy and allow you to use
the machine while they rest. You could also view it as an opportunity to learn a
new exercise. Ask a staff person to teach you a different exercise to substitute
for the one you're waiting for. As with all fitness centers, peak usage is from
about 4:00-8:00 p.m. If you exercise at that time, being versatile with your
program can help make your visit enjoyable and productive.
*Sometimes I don't like the music that's playing in the
Wellness Center. Can a staff person change the music for me?
If a staff person changes the music for one individual, we are obligated to
change it for everyone that asks. If the music becomes a personal issue we
suggest a Walkman or other personal listening devise.
Training
